What Are your experiences with healthcare in your native country? What is it like for you in the US? What are the similarities (same) and differences?

By: Virginia Jimenes

I am from Dominican Republic. In my country i have good doctors. The people in my country do not have money. In the U.S. I have good insurance and good medicine. I like the U. S. better than Dominican Republic.

I'm from Ecuador. My experiences about healthcare in my country include getting an appointment. In the hospital the people don't pay for the consultation, but the medicine is very expensive. People don't have medicare or insurance. Sometimes people use natural medicine. For example herb tea and roots. However, we go to the hospital. In my country if we buy stronger medicine, we need a prescription. But first we have to go to the doctor's office. I think doctors are the same in the world. Life is important for everybody.

In the Ecuador the public hospital , social security and medicine are free. The service is fast when seeing the doctor and making appointments. When I go to the doctor I need to pay some money because nothing is free. I get prescription medecine at the pharmacy with medical insurance, the gobernament pays for the hosptial services. When making an appointment it takes about one month. affter that, I want for the doctor to get the prescription medicine. In Ecuador it is a littelbe different when and the U.S. visiting the doctor.

My experiences in Mexico when I went to the hospital is that the doctor asked "what is the matter?"

The Doctor gave prescription medicine like Ibuprofen and penicillin. I took it for 3 years for my allergy and injection.

Here is New York City I went to the emergency room in Elmhurst Hospital. My problem was sore throat. i took x-rays of the chest. The doctor asked what is the matter Isalas? I had a fever headache and cold. The doctor prescription antibiotic.

Recepies from Around the World

In Peru where I'm from a popular dish is "papa la huancaina." This dish comes from a city in Peru called Huancayo, which is located South of the country's capital, Lima. It's very easy to make and it's usually served as an appetizer. The sauce can be used as a dip for chips as well. Preparation time (25 minutes)Here is what you will need:

(Serves 6 ) Ingridients:

10 potatoes

1lb. of queso fresco (I usually use feta cheese)

6 hot peppers seedless (aji amarillo found in many supermakets in the peruvian produce section)

5 saltine crackers

1 cup of evaporated milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 garlic cloves

salt and pepper
lettuce

3 hardboiled egg

fresh black olives

Preparation:

1. Boil, peel and cut potatoes in slices

2. In a blender, mix the cheese, peppers, milk, oil, garlic, salt and pepper. The sauce should be a bit thick; add more cheese and olive oil if it's not, or add milk if it's too thick.

3. Lay a bed of lettuce leaves in a serving dish and place the potatoes on top. Cover potatoes with the sauce. Cut the hard boiled eggs in quarters and place on top of the potatoes. Add black olives if desired.

4. This dish can be served slightly cold.

April

What do you think when you hear April? Do you think of fresh baked pieOr is it the endlessness you see when you look in the skyIs it the touch of the warm sun on your skinOr is it the birds singing like flutes and violinsDo you think of lying for hours in the parkOr is the bright moon and the night so darkWhat do you think when you hear April?
