Updates from 204

April slowly finds us easing our way back on track after an unrelenting winter; snow days, class suspensions, and pre-scheduled breaks. Hopefully, we will get a reprieve; glorious sunshiny days, blue skies, flowers in all its varieties and colors, all the greens there are - the symbols of life; - sans allergies. Oh, that would be perfect! But. . . . ..

Let’s start with a teacher who captures a teachable moment. Yolanda Ruiz handling PS10 & 11, happened to ask her class if they know what Barnes and Noble is.  Someone answered candidly; “It’s a store.” Yes, said the teacher, but what kind of store? “A shoe store.” One of the students said.

So preparations for a trip to Barnes and Nobles went underway. Here’s the happy picture of the eager students armed with shopping, travel, and, location vocabulary; along with their teacher, taking time to snap a pic at Barnes. They read magazines, browsed and bought books and other goodies for their children and themselves. Both of her classes enjoyed the trip plus: “Oh so this is Barnes and Noble!”

The Civics and Citizenship class teacher; Beda Vergara, reviewed his class attendance, reflected on the progress and data showed that out of the 18 students who started the class, ten students have passed their citizenship examinations consisting of speaking, writing and content questions; as of April 2014. Congratulations! They are:

This is Vicenter Vizhnay. He is going to upload his contribution to our blog.

My name is Vicente Vizhnay. I was born and raised in Ecuador, my both parents were born in Ecuador they had six kids, I am one of them, I moved to the United States when I was 28 years old, living all my family in Ecuador, my wife and my three kids, I believed that in this country there are many good opportunities where anyone hardworking enough can avail of to have a better life for him and his family.

When I got in this country, I took a High School Equivalency test and I passed it. Since then I only dedicated to work but I did not study, because I didn’t have the green card.

Currently; I am attending to Computer and English classes, during the night four times a week at HANAC’S Adult Education Program and I am happy because I have been learn-ing a lot. Now my goals are, first to become a U.S Citizen, get better of my health, I am temporary disable, because five years ago I had my shoulder surgery, I am getting better little by little, I want improve in Computer and English Language. I will try to enroll in some adult classes if they accept me, also I want get a New York welder certificate and go back to work. Right now I am going to physical therapy and extra exercises. Thanks God I feel my health is improving. I try to write and read as much as possible, others things that I am planning to do is bring my kids to the United States, if is possible they are adults now, That’s my goals and dreams..

The lesson that really liked and learned was Investment Club, it tells about the club’s in-vestments and how it performed. It’s very informative. I have never gone to Wall Street I saw only in TV.

Some of the new words I learned in these lessons are Ticker Symbols, Shares Owned, Price when purchased, Original Investment, Current Market price, and Current Value. It’s very exciting when investors make more money than when they started it.

I am the one that posted this,
Vicente.

Invitation

Some students will try at uploading their work to our blog. Some of those responding to my request are Felicitas Herreros, Vicente Vizhnay, Sherin, . They will be the ones to upload their work.

Michelle Obama's Message: 03.04.13

Let's Move! Hangout
Yes, that's the First Lady, Michelle Obama's health initiative to encourage everyone to live a healthy life to realize full potentials.

Today, her 'Let's Move Hangout' had the first virtual chat, 11:10 am EST. It was moderated by Kelly Ripa. It's very informative, and amazing to realize how many joined the chat from all walks of life; third graders, professionals, parents, fitness believers and just about any one who believes that health is one common denominator to help anyone realize their potentials. success, and fulfillment in life. While the live chat was going on hundreds of thousands were twitting, facebooking, and all other social networkers were busy sharing their healthy moves too.

One participant in the chat lost 200 pounds just by working out and eating healthy. No medical procedures. The incident that made him decide and never looked back was when the tailor measured his waist and the tape measure wasn't enough to go around his mid section which means his waist was more than 60 inches. Bottom line; it's not easy and fast but it can be done.

If you missed it because you were busy or attending to something else, just go online; but before you go, consider this stats from FRAC (Food Reserch and Action Center). Two–thirds of adults are overweight and one–fourth of children 2-5 years old and adolescents are too. This is not world record this is only USA. That's a real reason for concern and it will really impact America's future.

Now—Let's Move!!!

What's up in the last week of February 2013

On February 27, 2013 HANAC ESOL at IS 204 will host the NYPD Community Affaires of L I C, Queens. Expected agenda important to our students and anyone for that matter will be how to navigate the security, emergency, and legal factors that might get along the way with issues like domestic violence, accidents, emergencies and knowing legislations issued by New York City protecting immigrants’ rights and status.

On February 28, 2013 HANAC ESOL at PS 19, speakers from the NYC Mayor's Office of Immigration Affaires, Family Justice Center, and Elmhurst Hospital  will have a workshop with our students on rights and responsibilities, navigating the justice system, and learning healthy habits.

This will be empowering to the students at HANAC mostly composed of immigrants, their families and friends.

Chairperson for this event is Rosa Alva with Gloria Weber and Athena Beltecas handling arrangements and accommodations in their respective  sites.

Hi 2013

Dear friends of HANACTimes.blogspot.com,

I will begin with this quote instead of apologizing for my absence.

"For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice; and to make an end is to make a beginning." —T S Eliot

Yes, the highs and lows of the year that was are things of the past now. We have learned from our collective experiences, we celebrated our highs, assuring ourselves that we did good, we reflected on our lows and resolved to give it a renewed and more vigorous effort to make it better, assuming that the circumstances are within our control; and as we ease into the new year we hope for better performance and better results.

Here is one to expect for this coming year. My computer class will try to get some work that is reflective of their improvements in handling the digitized world in our blog. Getting to make a presence on the World Wide Web has some constraints and I respect the sentiments of my students. Some are a bit hesitant to be very 'visible' on the web and they have their reasons; while some are eager to jump in and make their presence.

Students from all classes are welcome to participate; so at this point I renew my invitation to staff and students to contribute to the publication. Thanks.

So ‘see you soon’— g
